Welcome to Napa Valley Playhouse
And the World Goes 'Round; Oct 25 - Nov 10, 2013 PDF Print E-mail

A musical revue showcasing the songs of John Kander and Fred Ebb
On stage October 25 - November 10, 2013
Directed by Michael Ross

When it debuted in 1991, the New York Times’ Frank Rich said “The World Goes ‘Round” was “an unexpected delight: a handsome, tasteful, snazzily staged outpouring of song and dance.” This popular musical featuring audience favorites from the team of Kander and Ebb comes to the Napa Valley Playhouse October 25-November 10.

John Kander and Fred Ebb began writing music together in the early 1960s. One of their earliest compositions, “My Coloring Book,” was recorded by a rising young star by the name of Barbra Streisand, and their first big show – “Flora the Red Menace” – featured the Broadway debut of Liza Minelli. As they developed their signature bold and sassy style, the pair went on to create the songs for some of the most memorable stage musicals of the modern era, including “Cabaret” and “Chicago,” as well as scoring the Liza Minelli Film “New York, New York,” and in the 1990s wrote the music for the hit “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” Classic songs included in “The World Goes ‘Round” include “Cabaret,” “Money, Money,” “New York, New York,” “Mr. Cellophane,” and “All That Jazz,” to name just a few.

Director Michael Ross says, “The show is written as a 'jukebox musical' - a compilation of their music with no storyline.  I have set the story in a coffee shop, and have embellished and rearranged the characters to include a homeless woman, a coffee shop girl, her boyfriend, a housewife, a businessman, a widower and a socialite journalist, and these characters tell their stories through the music of Kander and Ebb.”

A talented cast from across the North Bay has been assembled for the show: Therese Abalo, Gianna DiGregorio, Tina Lloyd Meals, Barbara McFadden, Tim Setzer, Patrick Sprinkel, and Ted von Pohle. Ellen Patterson is the Music Director while Tina Lloyd Meals is the Vocal Director and Staci Arriaga is the Choreographer. April George is the Production Manager and Lighting Designer, The set design is by Bill Kauffman and Barbara McFadden is the Costume Designer.

“The World Goes ‘Round” opens October 25 and runs through November 10 with Friday and Saturday evening shows at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $30 general admission and $27 for seniors, students over 21 and the military, or $15 for youth under 21. An 8 x 10 Holiday; Dec. 6-22, 2013 PDF Print E-mail

On stage December 6 - 22, 2013

"An 8 x 10 Holiday: A Festival of 10 Minute Plays" will be presented December 6-22, 2013, co-produced by Lucky Penny Productions and Napa Valley Playhouse. This second annual short play event will feature new, previously unproduced works with some connection in theme, character, plot or setting to the end of the year or holidays. We have a new gateway setup with Entrust to order tickets online.

The plays in the program will be selected by a panel which will read "blind" copies of the scripts – they will not know the names of the authors – and all plays will have four or fewer characters and minimal sets, lighting and other technical needs to keep the focus on stories and characters. Each play selected by the reading panel will be assigned to a director who will cast and rehearse the play and prepare it for presentation.

The author whose play is voted by the audiences as the "People's Choice" will receive a $100 honorarium.

Le Jazz Hot; January 18th, 2014 PDF Print E-mail

Le Jazz Hot
One Night Only!
January 18th, 2014 at 8pm

Le Jazz Hot (the Quartet/Trio of the Hot Club of San Francisco) is an ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Hot Club de France. The ensemble borrows the all-string instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club, but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group's superb lead guitarist Paul Mehling. Hearing the ensemble live, or on any of their 13 albums, carries the listener back to the 1930's and to the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris or the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of Le Jazz Hot has entranced audiences around the globe for over 22 years. Critics have hailed the group's playing as "intricate, scorching and often brilliant…" Acoustic Guitar. From festivals in Mexico and France to concert halls across North America, The Hot Club of San Francisco keeps this historic music fresh and alive.
